The assessment of the green-lipped mussel Perna vlridis as a biomonitoring agent of Cu was conducted based on laboratory and field studies. Different rates of accumulation and depuration in different soft tissues (STs) are found and this mighi be due to different mechanisms of Cu binding and regulation. At the end of depuration, Cu levels in different STs of P. viridis were 2-10 times higher than those before exposure. The ratio of maximum to minimum of Cu levels (3-5), the positive patterns (although different rates) of accumulation and depuration in the different STs for Cu indicated that P. viridis is a good biomonitoring organism for Cu and our conclusion is also supported by the two field samples collected from contaminated and uncontaminated sites. The distribution of Cu in the STs indicated that some of the tissues could become better biomonitoring organs of Cu than total STs.
