ABSTRACT

The reproductive biology of male Cynopterus brachyotis, a frugivorous bat which is considered to be an important seed disperser in paleotropical forests, was conducted in a fragmented forest (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Forest Reserve, Bangi, Selangor) and an agricultural area (Kuala Perlis, Perlis). Sampling of bats was carried out using mist-nets for 12 months from April 2000 to March 2001. A standard histological method was used to study the changes in the testes. The histological study showed the presence of spermatozoa almost every month in some adult testis. Males appeal to be fecund throughout the period of sampling. Cynopterus brachyotis in the UKM Forest Reserve and Kuala Perlis both showed continuous bimodal polyoestry. Males may have some spermatozoa in the testis and epididymis year-round, but, like the females, are considered to demonstrate two breeding peaks per year.
