Oviposition deterrent and ovicidal activity of hexane, diethyl ether, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water extract of 50 plants were studied at 1000 ppm concentration against Spodoptera litura Fab. Effective plant extracts identified from the preliminary study were further studied at 0.1, 1.0, 2.5 and 5% concentration. Statistically significant (p<0.05) oviposition deterrent activity was recorded in hexane extract ofAegle marmelos, Coleus aromaticus and methanol extract of Cyperus rotundus, C. aromaticus at 5 % concentration. Ovicidal activity was recorded maximum in hexane extract of C. aromaticus, C. rotundus, ethyl acetate extract of Cliestanthes collinus, Pergularia daemia and methanol extract of C. rotundus, C.collinus at 5% concentration. From this study it is evident that plant extracts possess significant oviposition deterrent and ovicidal activity against Spodoptera litura. Further isolation of active principle responsible for the activity will be studied for developing a novel botanical pesticide in future.


Tindakan menghalang pengoviposian dan aktiviti ovisid heksana, dietil eter, etil asetat, metanol dan ekstrak air daripada 50 jenis tumbuhan telah diuji pada kepekatan lOOOppm terhadap Spodoptera litura Fab. Tumbuhan yang didapati memberi kesan dikaji dengan lebih mendalam pada kepekatan 0.1, 1.0, 2.5 dan 5%. Ekstrak heksana daripada Aegle marmelos, Coleus aromaticus dan ekstrak metanol daripada Cyperus rotundus, C. aromaticus didapati berkesan menghalang pengoviposian (p< 0.05) pada kepekatan 5%. Ekstrak heksana daripada C. aromaticus, C. rotundus, ekstrak etil asetat daripada Cliestanthes collinus, Pergularia daemia dan ekstrak metanol daripada C. rotundus, C. collinus didapati menggangu aktiviti ovisid pada kepekatan 5%. Kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa ekstrak tumbuhan boleh menghalang pengoviposian dan mempengaruhi aktiviti ovisid.
