COMPARATIVE LEAF ANATOMY OF MORINDA CITRIFOLIA L. AND MORINDA ELLIPTICA RIDL. (RUBIACEAE)

ABSTRACT
A study on the leaf anatomy of Morinda dtrifolla and M. elllptica shows that the two species are nearly similar in terms of the venation pattern, the type of stomata, the shape of midribs and petioles in transverse sections (TS), the structure of the lamina and the presence of calcium oxalate raphides and acicular crystals. The anticlinal walls are straight in the adaxial epidermal cells and wavy in the abaxial cells for both species. Differences are seen in the vascular tissue characteristics of the midrib and petiole.
ABSTRAK
Kajian ke atas anatomi daun Morinda citrifolia dan M. elllptica menunjukkan kedua-dua spesies hampir sama daripada segi corak peruratan, jenis stomata, bentuk tulang daun dan petiol pada keratan rentas, struktur lamina dan kehadiran hablur asikular dan rafid kalsium oksalat. Binding antiklin sel epidermis adaksial adalah lurus dan berombak dalam sel epidermis abaksial bagi kedua-dua spesies. Perbezaan dapat dilihat pada ciri-ciri tisu vaskular dalam tulang daun dan petiol.
