ABSTRACT
A study was conducted to examine the effects of duration and precooling temperature on the subsequent growth and flowering of two selected tulip cultivars, namely White Dream and Yokohama. The bulbs were precooled at 2 different temperatures (5°C and 9°C) for 5 durations (9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 weeks). The experimental design used was a split-split plot design replicated three times as randomized block. The parameters measured were initial plant height, final plant height, first internode length, last internode length, perianth length, number of days to first visible bud, coloured bud stage, number of days to anthesis, flower diameter and flower longevity. Total stem elongation (plant height, first internode, last internode, and perianth length) was significantly affected by variety. Perianth length, number of days to coloured bud stage, number of days to anthesis and flower longevity were significantly affected by temperature. Last internode length, perianth length and flower longevity were not influenced by duration of precooling. There were also significant interaction between variety and temperature, and temperature and duration for some parameters evaluated. Results showed that the optimal keeping duration for 5°C and 9°C precooling temperature were 9 and 11 weeks respectively for both White Dream and Yokohama.
