ABSTRACT

Data on Annonaceae in a 50-ha permanent plot at Pasoh Forest Reserve, Negeri Sembilan, obtained from the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) were used to assess primary productivity and distribution of the family. The data were based on three censuses conducted in 1985, 1990 and 1995. From the 1995 data, 19 genera and 42 species of Annonaceae were recorded in the plot. A total of 23,597 Annonaceae trees were enumerated of which the most abundant species was of Anaxagorea javanica (7,598 trees). Total above ground biomass of the family was estimated at 8.45 t ha"1, and the highest above ground biomass was represented by Monocarpia marginalis, estimated at 1.84 t ha"1. The biomass estimation for 15 years increased significantly (ANOVA, p< 0.001) between the three censuses. Distribution wise, soil type is shown as an influential factor as well as the topographies.
