ABSTRACT

A comparative study on the leaves and petioles of five Peninsular Malaysian species of Heritiera Dryand. (Sterculiaceae; was undertaken in order to investigate interspecific anatomical variations which may be useful in species identification. Characters which may be useful in differentiating certain species include the presence of hypodermis, multiple epidermis, the number of central bundles, the presence of styloids and silica bodies and the type of trichomes. A combination of these characters may be used to identify the species studied.

Key words: Heritiera, Sterculiaceae, leaf anatomy, petiole anatomy, trichomes, crystals
