ABSTRACT
Eggs (<24 hr old) of the rice moth Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton), when exposed to volatiles emanating from cut pieces of garlic (Allium sativum) bulbs or from residue of hexane solvent extract (fresh or 3 months old following storage undei refrigeration) of the bulbs, completely failed to hatch. Total post-embryonic development period and adult emergence ol this insect were adversely affected to varying degrees when individuals were reared for the first 2 weeks of larval life 01 for similar duration from the sixteenth day of their lives in an environment of garlic bulb volatiles. Progeny of parents exposed during adult life to the volatiles for 24 hr also had setbacks in their total pos-tembryonic developmental duration and male: female ratio. This implies a transgenerational "carry over" of the detrimental effects of garlic bulb vapours on the developmental programme of the offsprings. The principal components such as allicin, 2-propene sulfenic acid, 2-propene thiol, propylene, thioacrolein and ajoene, already known to be present in the volatiles, were presumed to be responsible for the adverse effects reported here.
