LIFE CYCLE OF THE BROAD MITE POLYPHAGOTARSONEMUS LATUS (BANKS) (ACARI: PROSTIGMATA; TARSONEMIDAE) AND ITS INNATE PROLIFERATING CAPACITY ON CHILLI

ABSTRACT

: life cycle and the proliferating capacity of the broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), was studied on chilli, Capsicum annuuin, as the host plant using the modified leaf disc technique in the laboratory under an ambient condition of 26-29°C, 65-90% RH and 12 hr photoperiod. The broad mite passed through the egg stage in 37.1 ± 3.9 hr, and the larval stage in 18.7 ± 4.0 hr. The larva went through a resting stage (chrysalis) which lasted 17.2 ± 3.2 hr before eclosion into the nymphal stage which took 17.5 ± 6.0 hr before reaching active adulthood. On average, females survived for 306.2 hr and males for 238.2 hr. Fifty percent mortality for males and females occurred by the 13th and 17th day respectively. The amount of eggs laid per female was significantly correlated with female life span; the regression being Y = 0.0468X. Daily fecundity remained high for the initial 12 days of the oviposition period (20 days). With the rm reaching 0.2925, the population would be capable of doubling within one week and would continue to double every 2.9 days.


ABSTRAK

Kitaran hidup dan keupayaan pembiakan hamama lebar, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), telah dikaji pada pokok cili, Capsicum annuuin, sebagai pokok perumah dengan mengguna teknik cakra daun terubahsuai di dalam makmal pada keadaan 26-29°C, 65-90% kelembapan bandingan dan 12 jam fotokala. Hamama lebar ini melalui peringkat telur dalam masa 37.1 ± 3.9 jam, dan peringkat larva dalam masa 18.7 ± 4.0 jam. Larva melalui peringkat rehat (krisalis) yang memakan masa 17.2 ± 3.2 jam sebelum eklosi kepada peringkat nimfa yang mengambil masa 17.5 ± 6.0 jam sebelum menjadi dewasa aktif. Purata, hamama betina mandiri selama 306.2 jam dan jantan selama 238.3 jam. Lima puluh peratus kematian jantan dan betina berlaku masing-masing pada hari-hari ke-13 dan ke-17. Banyaknya telur yang dihasilkan bagi setiap betina didapati berkait rapat secara bererti dengan jangka hayat betina; regresi ialah Y = 0.0468X. Fekunditi harian adalah tinggi dalam masa 12 hari pertama waktu oviposisi (20 hari). Seekor betina berupaya menghasilkan 11.9 anak betina dalam masa generasi 10.4 hari. Dengan nilai rm mencapai 0.2925, populasi ini akan berupaya mengganda dalam masa seminggu dan akan terus mengganda setiap 2.9 hari.
