ABSTRACT
Eleven snail species belonging to Pulmonata and Prosobranchia classes were collected from 6 districts of the Punjab province, Pakistan. These were Lymnaea luteola, L. acuminata, L. truncatula, L. auricularia, L. rufescens, Bullinus contortus, Physa acuta, Indoplanorbis exiistus, Gyraulus convexiuscutus, Oncomelonta Impensis and Bellamaya bengalensis. Prevalence of snails was high in autumn followed by spring and summer and decreased in early winter. Factors affecting snail population (under field conditions) including water temperature, light, water depth and hydrogen ions concentration (pH) were also studied. The optimum favourable temperature 26.0 ± 1.0°C, maximum day light (14 hr) and pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.14 were recorded.
Key words: Freshwater snails, Prosobranchia, Pulmonata
