ABSTRACT
The concentrations of Ni in eight different soft tissues of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis from 6 geographical sites along the coastal waters off Peninsular Malaysia were determined. The crystalline style (CS) and byssus, when compared with mantle, gills, muscle, gonad, foot, and the remaining soft tissue, accumulated significantly (at least P< 0.05) higher concentrations of Ni in both contaminated and uncontaminated samples, indicating that the style and byssus have a higher affinity for Ni to bind with metallothioneins. The higher concentrations of the Ni in the CS and byssus than in the other soft tissues became significantly (P< 0.05) higher (more pronounced) in mussels collected from contaminated coastal waters in the Johore Strait. This indicated a tissue redistribution of Ni due to its binding to metallothioneins for Ni detoxification. Therefore, the potential of CS and byssus as indicators of Ni bioavailability and contamination is suggested since the metal levels in them significantly and positively correlated with the Ni pollution levels represented by the Ni concentrations in the surface sediments of the sampling sites.
