ABSTRACT
The activity concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb in four species of fish (Atule mate, Pampus argenteus, Cynoglossus macrolepidotus and Sillago sihama) caught in the coastal water of Kuala Selangor was measured. The concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb in tissues ranged from 0.47 Bq kg-1 to 68.10 Bq kg-1 dry weight and 0.65 Bq kg-1 to 23.10 Bq kg-1 dry weight, respectively. The different levels of activity concentrations observed in different species may be due to differences in feeding habits and metabolic rates. Lower concentration factors of 210Po in fish tissues probably indicate that the accumulation of 210Po in the analyzed fish tissues is low and might be the result of low 210Po in the study area. The annual intake of 210Po and 210Pb via fish consumption in Malaysia are consequently estimated to be 0.28 Bq d-1 person-1 and 0.09 Bq d-1 person-1, respectively. This suggests that the dose of both radionuclides received by Malaysian population due to low consumption of fish.
