DISTRIBUTION OF OSTRACODS IN OFFSHORE SEDIMENT AROUND PULAU TIOMAN, PAHANG

ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to determine the distribution of ostracods in offshore sediment around Pulau Tioman, Pahang. A total of 9 stations were determined as sampling area. A total of 1231 specimens were found belonging to 12 families, 25 genera and 31 species. Family Trachyleberididae was the most dominant family with 329 specimens. The most dominant species was Pistocythereis bradyi with 198 specimens. Several physico-chemical parameters were measured in-situincluding temperature, depth and salinity. The values for temperature, depth and salinity ranged from 27.07-29.19ºC, 6.50-12.34 m and 30.02-30.57 ppt, respectively. For ex-situphysico-chemical parameters such as percentage of organic matter, sand, clay and silt the values ranged from 1.60-5.73%, 56.62-96.66%, 1.67-3.45% and 1.21-40.05%, respectively. The sediment texture in this study area can be categorized as silty sand, very fine sand, fine sand, medium sand and very coarse sand. The most dominant texture is silty sand. Abundance and diversity are most related to the character of the sediment.

ABSTRAK

Kajian yang telah dijalankan adalah untuk menentukan taburan ostrakod dalam sedimen luar pantai sekitar Pulau Tioman, Pahang. Sebanyak 9 stesen telah dipilih sebagai stesen persampelan. Sebanyak 1231 spesimen telah dijumpai daripada 12 famili, 25 genus dan 31 spesies. Famili Trachyleberididae merupakan famili yang paling dominan dengan 329 spesimen. Spesies yang paling dominan adalah Pistocythereis bradyi dengan 198 spesimen. Beberapa parameter fiziko-kimia telah diukur secara in-situterdiri daripada suhu, kedalaman dan saliniti. Julat bagi setiap parameter masing-masing adalah 27.07­29.19ºC, 6.50-12.34 m dan 30.02-30.57 ppt. Bagi parameter fiziko-kimia ex-situ seperti peratus bahan organik, pasir, lodak dan lempung dengan julat bagi setiap parameter masing-masing adalah 1.60-5.73%, 56.62-96.66%, 1.67-3.45% dan 1.21­40.05%. Tekstur sedimen di kawasan kajian boleh dikelaskan kepada pasir berlodak, pasir sangat halus, pasir halus, pasir sederhana dan pasir sangat kasar. Tekstur yang paling dominan adalah pasir berlodak. Kelimpahan dan kepelbagaian ostrakod adalah berkait dengan ciri-ciri sedimen.
